Opiskelijapojat kävivät Floridassa syyslomalla. Tommi ajoi sieltä autolla eilen 14 tuntia takaisin Greensboroon. Hän oli joukon ainoa 25-vuotias, jolloin auton vakuutukset Yhdysvalloissa ovat edullisemmat, nuoremmat kuljettajat joutuvat maksamaan enemmän.

Exchange students went to Florida in Fall break. Tommi drove 14 hours yesterday back to Greensboro. He was the only one over 25, since the younger students should have paid too much for the insurance of the rented car.

Pojat vierailivat Universal Studioilla, jossa kävivät muun muassa Harry Potterin linnassa. Siellä oli elokuvastudio, jossa kiviä lensi taivaalta, katselija väisti niitä automaattisesti ja tuli tunne, että nyt lähtee henki. Kokemusta ei voi verrata elokuviin, aivan siisti homma, kertoo Tommi.

The boys visited the Universal Studios, where they went e.g. to the castle of Harry Potter. There was a studio, where stones flew from the sky and the visitor didn´t want to get hits from them. Otherwise you´ll get killed. I couldn´t compare that experience even with the movies.

Pojat kävivät fall breakella myös Saint Augustinissa, joka on Yhdysvaltojen vanhin kaupunki.

The boys visited also Saint Augustin, which is the oldest town of the USA.

Opinnot, The studies

Huomenna alkaa taas opiskelu syysloman jälkeen, kertoo Tommi aamuyöllä kello kolme, kun Kempeleessä nautitaan aamukahvia ja jatkaa:

”Minun Jenkkiopinnoissa huonoin koe on mennyt 80/100, muut kokeet vielä paremmin. Meillä Suomessa on kuitenkin korkeampi taso opiskelussa. Suomessa oppii siis enemmän, vaikka riippuu opiskelualasta. Suomessa oppii ehkä, miten asioiden pitaisi olla, täällä taas oppii enemmän luovuutta, perusteorian ja sen miten oikeasti maailma makaa.

Tomorrow starts the studies after the Fall break, tells Tommi at three at night, when in Kempele we are having a breakfast.

"My "Yankee" studies the worst test was 80/100 points, the other tests are even better. We in Finland have a higher standard of the studies, so we learn more in Finland. But it depends on the study field. We in Finland learn how the things should be, but here in the USA they learn more creativity and how the things really are. The basics.

Yliopistot Suomessa, The Universities in Finland

Suomen yliopistot ovat tiedelaitoksia. Minusta on jotenkin turhaa opiskella johtamisen teoriaa kolme vuotta, olen jo täynnä sitä, mutta pitäisi vielä kaksi vuotta jaksaa samaa. Opiskellaan, että hyvän johtajan piirteet ovat sellaiset ja puoli vuotta opiskellaan, miten joku tutkija on sen määritellyt, sitä opiskellaan, toinen sanoo sitä ja toinen tätä. Pyöritellään ympäri puoli vuotta.

The universities of Finland are more scientific institutions than here. I think it is no use for me to study the theory of management or leadership for three years. I am filled it already, but I should be doing that two more years. We study in Oulu University, that a good boss has such and such kind of capacities. And you study even half a year how one single researcher has defined the leadership. One other says that, the other says that for half a year.

Johtamisen opiskelua, The study of the Leadership

Suomessa opiskellaan johtajuutta tiedeyhteisössä. Täällä opiskelen nyt mikroekonomiaa, makroekonomiaa ja markkinointia, joka on yksi parhaista kursseista. - Annetaanko ohjeita, kysyy iskä väliin. Täällä tutkitaan mitä markkinointi on. On sitä käytäntöäkin täällä.

In Finland we study leadership in a strict scientific environment. In Greensboro University I study micro and macro economy and marketing, which is one of the best courses. - Do they give advice? asks Daddy. They examine here what the marketing is and also in practice.

Iskä sanoo, että vastapuolta pitää ymmärtää. You have to understand the opposite person.

Niin, se on ihan sama kun tutustut uuteen ihmiseen. Jenkit ovat myös tunnettuja siitä, että kaikki asiat tehdään helposti. Ihmiset on täällä laiskoja, ettei mittään järkeä. Joten onkin hauska seurata jenkkiläisten yhteiskuntaa verrattuna Suomeen, Onko suuri ero? kysyy iskä.

Yes. it is always the same, when you make friends with a new person. The "Yankees" are also known of the fact, that all the things are done easily. People are quite lazy here, I do not understand that. So it really is very interesting to compare this society with the Finnish society. - Is there a big difference? asks Daddy.

Työ Suomessa, The Work in the USA

On, on. Täällä ”pakotettaan” ihmiset tekemään asioita; jos et tee, niin oot kusessa, Suomessa on toisin. Suomessa eletään vielä 60-luvulla työllistämisessä, sanoo Hyssälä samaan aikaan aamutelevisiossa.

Yes, yes. You´ll have to do things. If you don´t, you are in the troubles. It isn´t like that in Finland. 

Minulla on huoli siitä, mistä saadaan Suomeen töitä. Jo monta vuotta sitten sanoin, että Italiassa ja Espanjassa nuorten työttömyys on sitä, jos kukaan ei halua tehdä töitä niissä maissa. Suomessa paskatyöt on kyllä paskatöitä, mutta täällä Jenkkilässä työ on työtä, ihan sama mitä tekee, itse työ on tärkeää."

I am worried about how we get work in Finland. I also said for many years ago, that the unemployment of young people in Italy or Spain and maybe in Finland depends of the fact or presumption, that people don´t want to work in those countries. In Finland the worst work is really the worst, but here in the USA the work is the work whatever you do, the work is highly respected!
